The NASCAR Xfinity Series will take on the 2.67-mile Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez Road Course in Mexico City for the first time since 2008, as 39 drivers will contest for 50 Laps and 121 miles. JR Motorsports’ Connor Zilisch will start on Pole, alongside NASCAR Cup Series regular, Ty Gibbs, who’s looking to get a handle of the track for tomorrow’s Viva Mexico 250.
Practice and Qualifying report
Today marked the first time cars hit the track all weekend, after logistical issues delayed the arrival of drivers and industry personnel. Ty Gibbs was the fastest in practice, as Zilisch was second. Mexico native, Daniel Suarez, destroyed his #9 Quaker State Chevrolet, as he had brake issues all morning throughout the session. He will start 39th, receiving no Owner’s Points or Prize Money, as NASCAR granted two provisionals in the event of there being more than the standard 38-car field.
All afternoon, drivers could not get the hand of the track, as Anthony Alfredo put his team to work on his #42 Dude Wipes Chevrolet. His team has gone to work on the left front of his vehicle instead of going to a backup car, after his gas pedal stuck to the floor during practice.
Race Predictions
Today’s race will be a challenge for drivers, as rain lingers in Mexico City and we’ll likely see rain tires utilized. Connor Zilisch’s road racing background makes him an easy favorite, but Ty Gibbs is notorious for showing strength and speed on the NASCAR Xfinity Series, regardless of the type of track.
Expect Christopher Bell to make a lot of noise throughout the afternoon as well. With his Cup Series experience, having won at the Circuit of the Americas earlier this year, Bell qualified 3rd for today’s race and his Sam Hunt Racing team has brought strong road course cars to the track over the years. If Daniel Suarez stays out of trouble, you can also expect him to drive his way to the front after finding himself fourth on the speed chart in practice.
